The Evolution of a New Albany Backyard
In New Albany, where steep lot grades often leave backyards underutilized, this project sought to double the home’s footprint. The goal was to convert a standard elevated deck into a two-story outdoor suite, a sun-drenched upper lounge, and a fully dry, protected lower patio.
The Innovation: The “Dry-Zone” Infrastructure
The defining feature of this $75k+ build is the Trex RainEscape® system. This isn’t just a deck; it’s a precision-engineered roof for the patio below.
- Under-Deck Living: By installing a network of troughs and gutters above the joists, we diverted all water away from the structure, creating a 100% dry living space on the ground level.
- Structural Longevity: Beyond comfort, this system shields the wooden framing from moisture, effectively pausing the clock on wood rot and decay.
- Ceiling Integration: Because the area is now weather-tight, we safely installed recessed electrical lines for ceiling fans and an entertainment hub, all hidden behind a clean, finished ceiling.
The Spectrum: Govee Smart Integration
To transition the space from day to night, we integrated Govee RGBWIC Smart Lighting, which allows the homeowner to instantly redefine the deck’s atmosphere via a smartphone.
- Dynamic Scenes: The system features 16 million colors and over 60 preset scenes, from subtle warm ambers for dinner to vibrant “Music Mode” effects that sync to audio.
- Zonal Control: RGBWIC technology enables “segment” control, dimming the stairs for safety while maintaining a moody, colorful glow along the main perimeter.
- All-Weather Durability: Designed for Indiana’s climate, the IP67-rated lighting remains operational through heavy storms and freezing winters.
