Three decades in construction and a stubborn refusal to build anything he would not put behind his own house.
Ben White is the owner and lead designer at SunnySide Decks & Outdoor Living, a family-owned outdoor living company based in Sellersburg, Indiana.
Ben runs the consultation. Ben draws the 3D model. Ben walks the job site. When a homeowner in Jeffersontown, New Albany, or Bardstown hires the company, the owner is the one standing in the yard, not a salesperson who will never see the build.
The name comes from a local saying: to see the sunny side of Louisville, you have to cross the river into Indiana.
Ben watched builders across Kentuckiana cut corners for years. Cookie-cutter builds from contractors who never asked what the space could become. Projects quoted over the phone without anyone walking the property.
He launched SunnySide Decks to do the opposite. Show up with material samples matched to the phone call. Walk the yard. Talk through possibilities before quoting a price. Spend more time asking how a family lives outdoors than talking about decking brands.
Would I build it for my own backyard? If not, I am not building it for you.
Ben runs a design-build operation backed by a degree in CAD, which means the same person who models the 3D rendering signs off on the framing.

Ben writes to give neighbors across Kentuckiana straight answers, not to impress other builders. Expect posts on:
If Ben writes about it, a neighbor asked him during a consultation.
“I talk about the realm of possibilities throughout the process rather than trying to sell everything right at the beginning. I want homeowners to understand all the creative things we can do with the project.”
A “good, better, best” tiered proposal so you can choose the scope that fits your budget.
Ben sends detailed information on building practices and materials before he arrives for the on-site visit.
Within two days of the visit, you receive three clearly priced options, each with its own rendering.
The same community that feeds SunnySide Decks through word-of-mouth referrals is the community Ben is raising his family in. He sponsors athletic teams for local schools and works with the town of Charlestown. That is a responsibility, not a marketing angle.
Every project is built by an in-house W-2 crew led by Lead Carpenter Alan Broy, not subcontractors.
